Individual therapy and counselling
Who Might Benefit from Individual Therapy and Counselling?
People come to therapy for many different reasons. As a clinical psychologist, I know that everyone’s story is unique and important.
No matter what brings you to therapy, I begin with understanding you, not just your symptoms. Understanding you as a person is always at the heart of my work. You’re more than a diagnosis or a checklist; you’re a whole person with your own experiences, strengths, hopes, and goals.
Some of the common concerns I help people with include:
- Anxiety, worry, phobias, and panic
- Depression, low mood, or persistent sadness
- Stress and burnout
- Relationship or interpersonal difficulties
- Perinatal mood and anxiety concerns
- Trauma and post-traumatic stress
- Grief after losing someone or something important
- Low self-esteem or self-criticism
- Eating concerns and disordered eating patterns
- Anger or irritability challenges
- Problems with alcohol or other substances
- Life transitions and identity questions
What to Expect from Individual Therapy
The individual therapy process, led by me as your psychologist, is supportive, structured, and grounded in the latest evidence-based research. I use different types of therapy, like cognitive-behavioural therapy, acceptance-based therapy, and schema therapy. I choose the approach that best fits your goals and what you need.
Initial Sessions
In your first one or two sessions, we spend time getting to know what’s going on in your life and why you came to therapy. We talk about the challenges that are bothering you the most, your personal history, and how these problems show up in your daily life. All of this helps me understand you better and shape a clear formulation and therapeutic plan.
Feedback and Planning
In the second session, I provide you with a summary of what I’ve understood about you so far. I also share my first thoughts and offer tailored recommendations. Then, we talk about what goals we want to focus on, agree on what we’ll work on and set expectations for the process ahead.
Treatment Sessions
Typical therapy sessions usually last about 50 minutes. Each session involves:
Collaborative agenda-setting
At the start, we choose what feels most important, so we use your time in a helpful way.
Skill building
Learning and practising new strategies to handle your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that maintain unhelpful patterns.
Homework
Between sessions, I may give you suggestions to practise skills in real-life situations. It helps make change outside the therapy room.
Ongoing evaluation
We will regularly talk about how things are going and make changes if needed, so therapy continues to support you.

Sunshine Coast Psychologist Offering Evidence-Based Care
Many people think therapy is just about talking. But it is more than that. In reality, it is about changing what keeps you stuck and learning ways to change it.
Research shows that some types of therapy can really help people feel better and handle life more easily. These include cognitive and behavioural therapy, schema work, and trauma-informed care.
At McDonald Clinical Psychology, I use different therapeutic tools and approaches based on what will work best for you and your goals.
Your Role in Change
Now, let’s talk about your part in the therapy process. Firstly, therapy is a collaborative process, which means it’s something we do together. While I bring clinical expertise, your lived experience, insight, and participation are central to success. Therefore, some key elements that support progress include:
- Engaging regularly and consistently
- Practising strategies between sessions
- Offering honest feedback about what is and isn’t working
- Being willing to try new ways of responding to old patterns
